How to Tell If Your Roof Has Hail Damage: A Dallas Homeowner's Guide

June 15, 2026 · 5min read · True Roof Inspections

Dallas-Fort Worth sits in one of the most hail-prone regions in the United States, and a single spring storm can do thousands of dollars of damage to a roof. The hard part is that hail damage is rarely obvious from the ground, and it is easy to confuse with normal wear. Here is what to actually look for, and how to know when it is time for a closer look.

Signs of hail damage you can check from the ground

Before climbing anywhere, walk your property after a storm and look at the things hail hits that are easier to see than the roof itself. Damage to these is a strong clue that your shingles took a beating too:

  • Dents or chips on gutters, downspouts, and gutter screens
  • Dings on metal vents, flashing, and the AC condenser fins
  • Cracked or broken roof vents and skylights
  • Granules from your shingles collecting in gutters or at downspout outlets
  • Dents on a wood fence, mailbox, or garage door on the same side as the storm

What hail damage looks like on the shingles

On the roof itself, hail damage usually shows up as random dark spots where the protective granules have been knocked off, exposing the asphalt underneath. Genuine hail hits are random in pattern, soft to the touch, and often come with a fresh, bruise-like feel. This is different from the straight lines of normal wear or the blistering that comes from age and heat.

Cosmetic vs functional damage

Not every mark is a problem. Cosmetic damage looks bad but does not shorten the roof's life. Functional damage breaks the shingle's seal or knocks off enough granules to expose the asphalt, which leads to leaks and premature failure. Telling the two apart is exactly where a trained, Haag-certified eye matters.

Why you should not rely on a free roofer inspection

After a storm, roofing companies canvass neighborhoods offering free inspections. The problem is simple: a roofer is paid when you hire them for the work, so a free inspection is a sales call. An independent inspection has no stake in the outcome. We do not sell roofs and we do not work for insurance companies, so our only job is to document what is actually there.

When to get a roof inspection

If a significant hailstorm passed over your area, or you see any of the ground-level signs above, it is worth getting an independent, documented inspection. You will have dated, labeled photos of your roof's true condition, so you understand exactly where your roof stands.

Frequently asked

Can I see hail damage from the ground?

Usually not clearly. Hail damage on shingles is subtle and easy to confuse with normal wear, which is why a close, slope-by-slope inspection with photos is the only reliable way to document it.

Should I get my roof documented soon after a hailstorm?

Documenting your roof's condition soon after a storm gives you a clear, dated record of what the storm did. We document the facts with photos; what you do next is up to you.
